The lockdown is turning out to be truly tragic. As of now, the news report that has shaken the whole nation is the death of Jayaraj and Bennicks in police custody in Tuticorin. The father and son were picked up by the cops for allegedly keeping their mobile phone shop open in the lockdown. They had an argument with the cops but what followed is horrific to say the least! P Jayaraj, 59 and his son, Fenix, 31 were taken for questioning by Sathankulam Police on June 19. Relatives and friends have alleged that they were beaten badly and sexually assaulted in police custody, which led to their deaths. Fenix died on June 22 at the Kovilpatti General Hospital while his dad passed away a day later. The incident has outraged the nation.

The Federal, a Chennai-based news site has claimed that they were sodomized in police custody. It led to profuse bleeding. The report further says that they were threatened against complaining to the judicial magistrate. The incident has left the town fuming and traders are protesting against this custodial death. Tamil star Suriya has written a long note asking law makers to immediately look into the matter and provide justice to the families.

It seems they have suspended the cops in question but everyone wants charges pressed against them. Bollywood celebs like Priyanka Chopra, Taapsee Pannu and others have expressed shock and dismay. We saw the kind of protests for George Floyd a fortnight back. This is something that has happened closer to home and it is shocking.

Kamal Haasan has also objected to whatever has happened. We hope the families get justice at the earliest.
