It is not shocking to hear about actors being suddenly replaced or dropped from projects. Everyone reacted with surprise when it was announced that Neena Gupta is going to be a part of Rohit Shetty's Sooryavanshi. After all, the age difference between Akshay Kumar and her isn't huge. Finally, Neena Gupta was removed from the film in December 2019. She had shot for the project for three days only. Then, the makers felt her character did not fit in nicely with the plot.
In an interview with India.com, Neena Gupta has spoken about how she came to know about her ouster from a production assistant. It seems Rohit Shetty did not meet her personally nor did he ring her up after the incident. She said, "Rohit Shetty never came. I never talked to him. I was told that the track has not been working for the film so they are removing the track. (I was informed about this) by the production assistant." The actress who delivered fab performances in Badhaai Ho and more recently, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan does not hold any grudges.
She said actors have seen much more worse things. "It happens in a movie that sometimes, a certain character doesn't work. Shooting ke baad vo hatate, isse acha hai pehle hi hata diya (They could have removed me after the shoot but it's good that I was let go early on). I don't have any problem with that," she said. Neena reasoned that there was nothing for Rohit Shetty to talk to her and she would not mind asking him for work in the future.
It seems the team decided against Neena as the age difference between Akshay Kumar and her is not much. A source told Deccan Chronicle, "Neena is just a few years older than Akshay. It was ridiculous in the first place to cast them as mother-son. When they shot together, director Rohit Shetty realised they didn't look like mother and son. That's why Neena's track was removed." Sooryavanshi was supposed to release in May but now it has been pushed due to the pandemic. Akshay Kumar plays a super cop in the film.
